An association between industrial facilities and companies in Kalundborg (Denmark) in which the wastes and/or byproducts of one become the raw materials for another – Kalundborg Symbiosis is is the world’s first working industrial symbiosis. For over 50 years, Kalundborg has been home to the first — and still the most advanced — example of this concept. Industrial symbiosis helps companies to reduce raw material and waste disposal costs, to earn new revenue from residues and byproducts, to divert waste from landfill, to reduce carbon emissions, and to open up new business opportunities. It brings advantages to both parties, and it is done for commercial and environmental reasons.
